Headquartered in Toulouse, France, Airbus develops, manufactures and supports commercial aircraft in the 100 seat and above range. In 2001, Airbus became a simplified joint stock company after the four national entities of France, Germany, the United Kingdom and Spain, which had previously formed the Airbus consortium, transferred their Airbus-related assets into new company; Airbus, EADS along with BAE Systems. In 2006, following the sale of BAE Systems' stake, Airbus became a wholly-owned division of EADS (now known as the Airbus SE). The company later merged its group structure with the largest division, Airbus Commercial Aircraft on 01-Jul-2017.

Manufacturing, production and sub-assembly of parts for Airbus aircraft are distributed across 16 sites around Europe, with final assembly in Toulouse and Hamburg. There are also centres for engineering design, sales and support in North America; and sales and customer support centres in Japan and China. Airbus also has a joint engineering centre in Russia with Kaskol.

Other company subsidiaries include Airbus Asset Management and Airbus ProSky, which provide integrated leasing and airspace management services.

In Oct-2017, Airbus acquired a 50.01% stake in the C Series Aircraft Limited Partnership, the manufacturer and seller of single-aisle Bombardier aircraft. Airbus officially closed the transaction on 01-Jul-2018, while Bombardier and Investissement Québec own approximately 34% and 16% respectively. Subsequent to the closure of the agreement, Airbus rebranded the C Series as the A220 family including the A220-100 (formerly CS100) and A220-300 (formerly CS300) aircraft. Bombardier completed its strategic exit from the commercial aviation programme on 14-Feb-2020, transferring its remaining interest in Airbus Canada Limited Partnership (Airbus Canada) to Airbus SE and the Government of Québec.
